40/40 Internship
The Bible reveals that before Jesus spoke one word of public ministry, he was led into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. As Jesus entered the wilderness he was full of the Holy Spirit, but he left the wilderness in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1,14) and began public ministry. Christ’s example is the catalyst for the 40/40 internship. It is a calling to raise up individuals in the power of the Holy Spirit to be effective leaders and ministers of the gospel where ever they go.
The 40/40 internship offers individuals a unique opportunity to immediately apply skills developed on their 40/40 wilderness experience and wilderness first responder training. Individuals in the program will become Wilderness First Responder certified and the 40/40 then.
The internship begins with an intensive Wilderness First Responder course. After becoming WFR certified, interns are sent into the wilderness on the 40/40. The purpose of the 40/40 is to develop technical wilderness skills in backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, backcountry cooking, outdoor living, outdoor leadership, group dynamics, leadership, and ministry. During this time of intensive skills acquisition, students will radically grow in their relationship with Christ and understanding of the Kingdom of God. It is during this time that students are changed by His love, becoming change agents for His Kingdom. After the 40/40 expedition, students will transition to ministerial roles as interns, serving students and working with instructors during the remaining summer season at SROM. 40/40 interns will work under SROM instructors to plan, prepare, and participate on courses. The skills acquired on the 40/40 will be practiced and developed throughout the remainder of the summer.
The 40/40 internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals who have a desire to serve in part or full time roles as wilderness leaders, missionaries, vocational ministers, camp counselors, school teachers, and business men and women, etc.
